Floor through apartments in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York. Having just finished construction, the architects wanted to represent the spaces as being lived in rather than empty shells. That alone is no major feat. Doing so in a matter of days is.

Robert Polidori | Robert Polidori | Monday, May 11, 2009
I just came across this great article on the incredibly gifted Robert Polidori. While I have long loved his work, I hadn’t heard or read much of a backstory on it. This article goes into some great detail about his start as a videographer and his switch into still photography as well as his work in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Traditional architectural photography is documentary. It’s intended to be aesthetically pleasing, of course, but the primary concern is to accurately depict the appearance of a structure. Most architectural photographers come to their craft through their love of architecture. Robert Polidori is different; he’s different in his approach and different in his motivation. He’s different in about as many ways as it’s possible to be different.

Geometric Abstraction | Zanis Waldheims | Monday, May 04, 2009
The work of this Latvian born, Poland raised, German citizen is really impressive - even more so when you discover he was born in 1902! His mathematical interpolations matched with a pre-Albers sense of color make for magnificently mesmerizing works of art.

Check out the gallery where you can learn more about the incredibly convulted history of the artist and order prints.

Charade Titles | Maurice Binder | Monday, May 04, 2009
Mid-Century Modern has a great piece on the work of Maurice Binder, who created the opening credits to one of my favorite movies, Charade. Some of the color combinations and patterns he used are just amazing and the feel of the whole piece has a great vintage glow that everyone seems to be trying to replicate these days.

East Village Studio | Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture | 2009
The East Village Studio shoot was a two-day affair. The pre-shoot day was spent planning the shots and scouting local shops for props. A number of incredible finds at a SoHo antiques shop provided for much of the charm, as the owner hadnt had a chance to move his things in. The day of the shoot required careful planning to coordinate 14 shots over a 12-hour span. Given the close proximity of each shot, those in other rooms were set up while others were shot, allowing the camera to move quickly through the space in as short a time as possible.

New Haven Trip | Sean Karns | 2009
A quick trip up to New Haven's beautiful Yale campus afforded views of architectural gems around every corner. The Beinecke library itself was well worth the drive.

On our way out of town we had to make a stop by Pepe's to round off the evening at a serious pizza landmark. All in all a great weekend getaway and one I'd highly recommend to anyone in the greater NYC area.
We Love Typography | John Boardley / Kari Pätilä | Friday, May 01, 2009
Thought up by John Boardley and Kari Pätilä, the team behind I Love Typography, We Love Typography is described as a FFFFound for type. Pretty simple idea, but a great one nonetheless. If you just want some quick type inspiration, head on over and browse through the pics.

American Apparel Melbourne | Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture | 2009
American Apparel is known for their bright stores, making lighting a breeze. They are also known for over 200 styles of clothing, which in today's economy are packed in like sardines. While it didn't take long to add little bits of light to fill the space, it did take hours to rearrange and hide the plethora of clothing that typically adorns the walls and floor racks. In each shot, over half of the store's stock was behind the camera. A great trick that requires time and careful planning for each shot.
Level & Tap | Sean Karns | Friday, May 01, 2009
A bit of shameless self promotion here. I was clued in to Level Tap through John Gruber’s Daring Fireball and decided to submit some photographs to the site. It’s a great idea, thought up by web dev / photographer Tom Watson, marrying flickr with mpix to sell prints online.

Soviet Architecture | Frederic Chaubin | Monday, April 27, 2009
Chaubin, the editor for French Magazine Citizen K has been photographing these strange, futurist buildings in the former Soviet Union. I am struck by the fact that being an architect in Russia at the time must have meant quite a lot of latitude for outlandish space-born design. I am sure there were a plethora of downsides to the job as well, but imagine being able to see such creations through and by public funding. Crazy.

Abundant use of bright blue LED lighting washing over a highly polished white resin floor proved extremely difficult when the client desired the warmth of the space to shine through.

Villa Planchart | Gio Ponti / Roberto Burle Marx | Thursday, April 23, 2009
An absolutely amazing collaboration between the Italian architect Gio Ponti and Brazillian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. At first it may seem a dizzying array of colors and forms, but give in and marvel at the skill and courage it took to design such an outstanding piece of art.

The O2 Blueroom | Jordan Parnass Digital Architecture | 2008
Set in the historic wrapper of Dublin's former Point Theatre, the O2 Blueroom brings the crags and cracks of the building to life. Given its intended purpose as a bar, the architect wanted to make sure he got pictures before anyone could coat the floor in beer and dance across the bar.
Visual Acoustics | Julius Shulman / Eric Bricker | Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Though I havent had a chance to see the film, I cant wait! Here’s a blurb from the film’s website:

Taking its aesthetic cues from Shulman’s own sensual and nuanced photography, the film’s narrative is built from a blend of Shulman’s own images as well as in depth interviews with architect Frank Gehry, designer Tom Ford, artist Ed Ruscha, actress Kelly Lynch and writer Mitch Glazer, publisher Benedikt Taschen, Academy Award - nominated cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and a host of others.

In addition, by offering unprecedented and exclusive access to his amazing photographic archive and his day-to-day life, Shulman’s dedicated involvement in the process afforded an incalculable benefit to the film. Through the exploration of both Shulman’s art and uniquely individualistic life, Visual Acoustics offers an unforgettable portrait of Modernism’s most eloquent ambassador.

Pepsico Headquarters | Edward Durrell Stone | Monday, April 13, 2009
Over the weekend I visited the Pepsico Headquarters to take a walk around their massive sculpture collection. It turned out that while the vast array of famous sculptures were impressive, I was more taken with the building. Designed in 1971 by Edward Durrell Stone, it sits perched above the sculpture park which sprawls out on an 112 acre site. The building is divided into 4 parts, with each part only connecting to its neighbor at the corners, allowing for protected intimate spaces around the extent of the building. Patterned concrete panels adorn the facades and bring the enormous building down to a human scale. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Boerum Hill Townhouse | JPDA | 2006
A derelict row house in the Boerum Hill neighborhood, unrenovated since the 1940’s, which was rebuilt and re-imagined as a light filled container for art and living. The original two-family structure was completely gutted, preserving only the front façade, side party walls, and the roof. A crumbling extension and the bottom half of the rear wall were removed, creating a dramatic glass opening to the garden beyond, and bringing copious amounts of natural northern light into a new studio space below. An ipe wood bridge spans over the studio and a recessed sculpture well and provides a link to the outdoor living space. Within the existing brick skin a new steel skeleton was inserted, allowing for a freeform composition of floating horizontal planes and vertical openings. The perforated floor plates encourage light and air to penetrate easily within the house, bringing a modern sensibility to a very traditional building envelope.
